| | notes: Justin Heinrich Knecht (1752-1817) was a German composer, church musician, opera composer and theorist who is all but forgotten today. He was born and died in the same town, briefly held a court appointment (toward the end of his 65 years) and enjoyed some esteem among colleagues: Beethoven, for example, owned a copy of his organ method. This new recording, which will be reviewed tomorrow on classical917.org, includes this Symphony, several opera excerpts and two "official" pieces---one an aria for soprano, the other an overture---from the turn of the nineteenth century. Hofkapelle Stuttgart is a relatively new period-instrument orchestra, which (also under Frieder Bernius' direction) recently recorded a complete opera by Knecht. |
