notes: Josef Suk's (1874-1935) wife was his mentor Antonin Dvorak's daughter, who died young (in fact, not long after her father died) of a congenital heart condition.  He wrote this piano suite for his young son, who had no memory of the young woman who had given birth to him.

notes: Finnish-born, German-trained Ernst Mielck (1877-1899) died at 21, just two weeks before his 22nd birthday, of tuberculosis-----at the home of his parents, who were temporarily living in Switzerland.  He was a pupil, in Berlin, of Max Bruch ---- who had written for him a very enthusiastic letter of recommendation.  This symphony and a piano concerto are his survivng major works.
