| | notes: German-born Netherlands composer Roentgen (1855-1932) wrote this symphony in the last year of his life, and it is very much unlike most other music written in 1931. It is a brilliant and ingenious use of the four notes B (B-flat in German notation), A, C and H (B natural in German nomenclature)----spelling Bach, and most commonly associated with Johann Sebastian. The last movement is a fugue, which begins quietly---much like Liszt's organ fugal exposition in his Fantasia and Fugue on B-A-C-H of nearly eighty years before. Roentgen, at the beginning of his career (while still in his teens), had composed an extended piano piece based on those same four notes and had actually played it for Liszt----who told him, in no uncertain terms, that his piece was too predictable and boring. |
