notes: British-born Clement Harris (1871-97), a confirmed Graecophile who studied music in Germany, died at 25 while fighting in the Greek-Turkish war.  Harris became a close friend of Siegfried Wagner, the son of Richard and Cosima, and took a trip to the far east with him.  "Paradise Lost" was sketched during that trip.  Harris was memorialized by the German poet Stefan George, and by Wagner himself in 1923, in his symphonic poem Glueck (Happiness).  Wagner credited Harris with influencing him in the direction of a career as a professional musician.
11:01 pmEASLEY BLACKWOOD: String Quartet No. 3, op. 42 (1998)/ Pacifica Quartet, (Cedille.50) click to buy

notes: Chicago-based composer and pianist Easley Blackwood, now 79, began his career as an expressive and dramatic atonalist (his first symphony, unveiled more than 50 years ago, is an outstanding example of his earlier work). In more recent years,  he has delved into a highly original exploration of what might be called a chromatic/romantic and highly tonal sound.  This third quartet of 14 years ago is one of the best examples of that phase of his creative career.
