| | notes: Edward Joseph Collins (1886-1951) was a native of Illinois and based in Chicago for most of his adult professional life, after studies in Chicago with Rudolf Ganz and in Germany with Engelbert Humperdinck and Max Bruch. During his European sojourn, in 1914, Collins was engaged as an assistant conductor for the Bayreuth Festival. His music was championed by longtime Chicago Symphony Orchestra Music Director Frederick Stock. Collins' output included one major symphony, three piano concertos, solo piano pieces and chamber works and many songs. This set of variations is thought to have been composed in the 1940s. Collins, who was a brilliant pianist, wrote in an essentially romantic but very original style. |

| | notes: af Sillen (1859-1951), of Stockholm, had a successful business career (in insurance) as well as one as director and benefactor of the New Philharmonic Society, a choral group which performed demanding works. He held that post from 1903 to 1917. But in a letter to one of his daughters (1913), af Sillen remarked that "my work in insurance is not the great interest in my life. If I had independent means, I would devote myself in earnest to composition." From 1915, he did just that, and ultimately had an impressive catalogue of works (including 5 symphonies, a violin concerto and several shorter though no less substantial compositions). Most of these were written between 1920 and the mid-1940s. af Sillen was already an old man when he composed his third symphony, which at the time of this recording (2001) was still in manuscript. |
