notes: This is one of a series of recordings Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra made for EMI, this one in the early spring of 1969.  Previously, Szell and his orchestra had collaborated with Emil Gilels on a cycle of Beethoven piano concertos, but this was a Columbia recording released (by relaxation of the orchestra's contract with Columbia) under the EMI banner.  In this group of 1969 sessions, Szell, Oistrakh and the Cleveland recorded another Brahms work, the Double Concerto, with the added participation of 'cellist Mstislav Rostropovich.

Temperamental concertmaster Rafael Druian, who joined the Orchestra in fall 1960, arrived at Severance Hall one morning thinking that there was a rehearsal for these Brahms sessions---but there wasn't.  Druian demanded an apology from Szell, who said he wouldn't apologize because he wasn't responsible for the mixup. Druian abruptly resigned.  Daniel Majeske, then the Cleveland's associate concertmaster, acted as concertmaster for the recording sessions; Szell appointed him permanent concertmaster shortly after the sessions were completed.  Majeske became the longest-serving concertmaster in the Cleveland Orchestra's history.
