Happy Birthday Johnny!...This weekend we'll begin a two part series on the music of John Williams, leading up to his 80th Birthday on February 8th. Johnny, as he was called in the early years, was an accomplished jazz pianist and session musician. His first real long-term collaboration (before Spielberg) was with Irwin Allen and his sci-fi series. Little did he know how far he'd go with Sci-Fi. But it was the late 60's and early 70's with scores such as The Reivers and The Cowboys that he would gain the attention of Steven Spielberg for his film The Sugarland Express. On part one of this series, we'll explore the scores that lead up to the Spielberg era. Tune in this Saturday night at 8pm, with an encore presentation Sunday at 5pm…only on Classical 91.7.

Williams' Two New Scores on This Year's List of Oscar Nominations

John Williams, who will be 80 years old in February, received two nomination from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for his scores to "War Horse" and "The Adventures of Tintin". These two scores are completely different in character, both in sound and style. However they remind us of his writings from the mid 80's and early 90's like from "Far and Away", and "Indiana Jones". Though scores today have taken on a new approach, (one of either minimalistic instrumentation and writing, or electronic and other avant garde styles), Williams has maintained his traditional approach to both orchestral color and melodic writing.

Silence is Golden!...This weekend we'll explore the Golden Globe winning soundtrack to The Artist, composed by Ludovic Bource. This score is very unique, as it serves as the film's FULL soundtrack. Most of the movie is silent, so Bource's music has to cary the action and dialogue. The Artist is presented not only without dialogue or sound effects, but in black and white as well, making a very unique telling of George Valentine and his fall from stardom as "talkies" emerged as the new film medium. The score was recorded by The Brussels Philharmonic. When a working orchestra that plays together constantly is hired for soundtracks, it gives the music a unified feeling. This is an amazing sounding score and is not one to be missed. Join us this Saturday at 8pm with an Encore presentation Sunday at 5pm, only on Classical 91.7.

The Iron Lady...Tune in this weekend as we explore the music of Thomas Newman. Newman is one of those composers with a very distinct color of composition. Although it penetrates nearly every score he writes, he is able to compose completely different sounding scores. This weekend's score will feature music from The Iron Lady. Thomas Newman has continued his tread, which follows the likes of Jerry Goldsmith, by interjecting moments of synthesized chaos amidst a lush and organic orchestra. This is a score not to be missed. Tune this Saturday at 8pm with an encore presentation Sunday at 5pm on Classical917.

Music From The Movies,
Saturday, January 7th at 8pm

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy...This weekend we'll explore the music of Alberto Iglesias. He's not very well known in the states, only having written a few scores for Hollywood. But he has been a working as a film composer for the last 20 years in Europe. He's a remarkable talent that we should see more from. His music is somewhat jazzy while keeping the story and mystery intact. He has a remarkable way of keeping minimal music very interesting. Join us this Saturday at 8pm with an Encore Sunday at 5pm only on Classical 91.7.
