Kamen's last Opus...This weekend, we'll feature the final film score that Michael Kamen was working on when he suddenly passed away: the score to Back to Gaya (Bo, Zino & the Snurks). Fans of Kamen's music will surely recognize this signature sound, very reminiscent of his Robin Hood score. This soundtrack recording became an emotional experience for everyone involved including Kamen's longtime associate Steve McLaughlin who headed up the project to finalize the score for inclusion into the film. The score was recorded by Kamen's favorite orchestra, the London Metropolitan Orchestra and included all of the principal players of greater London. The musician's love Michael Kamen and they played to pay their respects. Ultimately the result is a beautifully recorded and performed film score that is a fitting finale for this great film composer. Join Brad Sayles as he explores that score and more from Michael Kamen.

Music From The Movies Television,
Saturday, April 21th at 8pm

This weekend we'll explore music from TV that evokes magical and mythical stories. Television soundtracks have evolved to a point where they are now strong competitors for their big brother film scores. Where in the past electronics would play a big part in the score, now studios are utilizing full orchestras and using the music as a strong narrative component. We will feature music by Bear McCreary, Rob Lane and Rohan Stevenson, and Mark Isham. All these composers have found an incredible way to depict rather old and retold stories; giving them a fresh new approach. Join Brad Sayles this Saturday at 8pm and again Sunday at 5pm on Classical 91.7.

Kids Gone Wild!...This weekend we'll explore the music from James Newton Howard's new score to The Hunger Games. In keeping with this tone, we'll also explore Philipe Sarde's score to the 1990 film The Lord of the Flies. The similarities are amazing, including the use of a boy choir for both film scores. But what's even more interesting is how each composer set this topic of kids fighting each other with their orchestral tone. Howard had the daunting task of working around pop tunes, while Sarde was a straight forward traditional scoring job.  Tune in for this special campaign edition to find out how you can contribute to Music from the Movies and get a score of your very own. Join Brad Sayles and Eric Ladau this Saturday at 8pm and again Sunday at 5pm, only on Classical 91.7.
